The New Millennium

Tena koutou e ngä whänau, we are now well into the new millennium and it looks like we have gotten over the so called Y2K bug problems that were predicted by the experts. (know it alls)

But it now appears that we have swapped one hiccup for another as we find that we are now inundated with the ‘I love you ‘virus and a whole heap of other off shoots that are just as potent, so whänau be careful when you’re surfing out there, you could become a victim of jilted love or at least your computer could.

Te kotahitanga o te Iwi o Ngäti Wehi Wehi

Since our last news letter plenty has happened. For one we have had our A.G.M. and the following were elected to the executive.

Chair person: Te Hope Huia Hakaraia

Deputy Chair: Mrs Paddy Jacobs

Secretary: Mrs Anne Barber

Treasurer: Richard Orzecki

The Marae Trustees were re-affirmed as

Te Hope Huia Hakaraia

Anne Barber

Dolly Miratana

Hector Miratana

The committee are those people who are present at the AGM of the Iwi and it is they who elect the executive for a 3 year term. Trustees are nominated by the people but have to be sanctioned by The Maori Land Court.

Under the Iwi charter the sitting Chairperson and secretary hold automatic Trusteeships and the Marae Trustees and the Marae committee are deemed to be one and the same and hence are known as

The Marae Trustees Management Committee, or the MTMC for short.

Long serving member resigns

Also at the A.G.M Albert Gardiner our long serving treasurer tendered his resignation citing work commitments as the reason, however he has promised that his support for the marae will not diminish and he will be as supportive of the Marae as he has ever been.

Albert’s involvement with the marae spans a lot of years and his mahi has been very much appreciated especially by those committee members he has worked along side of in his capacity as Treasurer.

The MTMC and the whänau of Ngäti Wehi Wehi thank you Albert for your dedication and commitment to the hapü and Iwi and wish you all the best with your future mahi. .

"he mihi nui ki a koe"

Addressing issues

The MTMC has been very busy carrying out initiatives started in the previous years. One of these is the future of our Iwi, hapü and whänau.

Over the next few weeks the Mätauranga Komiti will be looking at producing a strategic plan on where the Iwi see’s itself in the next 25 years.

What will it’s objectives be, where does it want to go/be, how will it get there and how will the decisions we make today impact on our tamariki and Mokopuna of tomorrow.

These are some of the questions that will need to be addressed and when this document is ready to be put up for discussion, consultation with and input from the whänau will be crucial as the decisions made will dictate the direction in which the Iwi will go.

This however is still a few weeks away and we will endeavour to keep you up to date with what is happening.

Other important täke

Other initiatives seen as being important are getting our Iwi register up to date, holding a photograph display hui and getting together as a whänau with our Goldy Oldies so that they might be able to share with us some of their thoughts of the past, present and future

Keeping up with the play

Your Iwi has not been slow with new technology either as Richard explains, "Ngäti Wehi Wehi has set up a new web page. The page is still in it’s early stages of development and more information will be added as we get better at it so if you’re on the internet send us an email and tell us what you would like to see".

The kohanga can also be accessed using the same web page so whänau visit us and tell us what you think. We will also use this medium as one way of keeping

our internet users up to date with what’s

happening back home.

The Marae Matüa

The everyday running costs of the Marae is a responsibility that is or should be shared by all of us, but that does not seem to be the case because the burden of looking after the Marae Mätua obviously rests solely with the Kaumatua and whänau who live locally.

Finding ways to raise enough money to do the mahi is a big ask.

Our local whänau put in a huge amount of effort and time to ensure that the bills are able to be paid.

So if there are whänau out there who are able to set up or suggest ways of how we can raise more pütea by combining with other whänau in their area’s and forming fund raising groups to help relieve some of the pressure from off the home people, then we would love to hear from you.

Happy times

On a lighter note we have also been having some fun times. Rosina Matehaere celebrated her 50th birthday in March and everyone had a great time.

Congratulations Rosina and welcome to the nifty fifies. You can now look forward to all the good things that happen to you when you turn 50.

Sore back, sore leg, sore shoulder sore everything, with an ulcer and a little bit of gout thrown in and of course glasses. So…

"Hari huri tau kia koe" Rosina.

(Watch this space for more 50’s this year).

Reports from Marae members

Ngati Wehi Wehi can report that it’s nomination of Richard Orzecki for a place on the Otaki College School Board of Trustees was successful. Any Wehi Wehi parents/caregivers having problems or needing help regarding College business can contact Richard on 025 305 545 or on (06) 364 6473.

Errol Ruruku (Horace Cooks son in law) and Bobbie Miratana are still with the Manakau School Board Of Trustees and have just finished the process of selecting a new Principal, otherwise they report everything is kei te pai. Contact person for any School problems is Errol on (06) 362 6717.

Richard reports that Ngati Wehi Wehi has had an excellent response to the survey from the last newsletter and he is again asking for your help in filling out as many forms as possible.

Please also note whänau that the survey includes children and babies. The more we can get on to our Iwi register the stronger our case for a bigger slice of the cake when Presa are distributed out to Iwi.

.

Fundraising

Fundraising has again become the main thrust of the MTMC priorities this year and the sub committee set up last year meets regularly to discuss ways and means of how we can improve the financial coffers of our Marae Mätua.

Some of the things that have and are being done are Housie and Pub Charity.

Other sources of income are The Raukawa District Maori Council, the Eastern and Central Community Trust, the M.M.M.C and of course Koha which is still a regular source of income.

However more and more emphasis is being placed on trying to get larger amounts through grants and subsidies from organizations such as those that have already been mentioned and through claims from Crown enterprises such as Te ohu kai moana.

Pub charity grants

As Hokotuku explains, "once again the Marae is indebted to The Key West Tavern Levin and The Telegraph Hotel Otaki for their generosity. Both have been supportive of Ngäti Wehi Wehi and there past contributions have made life a lot easier for your committee in addressing maintenance and improvement costs at the Marae.

This year, Gary Conway of The Key West Tavern Levin has credited our account with $20,000, likewise Greg Ubiaga Proprietor of The Telegraph Hotel in Otaki has contributed $3,000, both grants made possible through Pub Charity

In both instances, the patronage of these two respective premises by whänau attending functions organised by your fund raising committee has cemented an excellent relationship with these two hotels.

This year we have endeavoured to try to arrange functions spread evenly over the whole year, hopefully this will attract more of our whänau to tautoko these events and enhance our relationship with the two respective hoteliers.

Your attendance is important in helping to strengthen our relationships with Gary and Greg so please note and keep these key dates clear.

  1. June 4th
  2. August 20th
  3. October 22nd
  4. December 10th

All functions start at 2pm and end whenever and in most instances transport is provided. Contact Hoko (06) 368 9319 or Dolly on (06) 362 6027.

So nau mai haere mai whänau, come along and join in the fun, and help to make these fund raisers a success………Oh and one more thing, don’t forget a plate please for our ongoing kai. Kia ora koutou katoa".

Fund Raising at the Marae

April saw our Whare kai filled to capacity with whanau coming from all over.

A kei te pai roast Pork ( donated by Max and Colleen Harper ) lunch with all the trimmings was complimented with a steam pudding, custard and cream dessert. That was followed later in the afternoon by a scrumptuous afternoon tea.

Mokai Reweti ( nee Gardiner ) our fund raising organiser did an excellent job of co-ordinating the day and says she is eagerly planning the next event which could be held sometime around August.

Mokai extends a huge thank you to all the whänau who helped in making this day the huge success that it was and also wishes to acknowledge and thank all those people who donated towards the kai.

Kia ora Mokai, your Iwi, hapü and whänau congratulate you and your helpers for a very good effort in raising plus for our Marae Mätua.

A much needed boost for our dwindling pütea.

Snippets of interest

Rollings and Sharon ( Huirangi / Tau Lewis and Piki / Butch Bevan) have bought the Manakau Store so people don’t forget to patronise and support Sharon and Rollings in their new business enture.Best wishes to you and your family from all the whänau of Ngäti Wehi Wehi.

News media stars

This weeks Horowhenua Kapiti Mail newspaper has an excellent front page photograph of

Nita Gardiner (Hoko’s Wife) and her right hand man/lady (Michelle daughter of Mai Matehaere ) jumping for joy after Nita and Hoko’s business The Redwood Lodge Motel in Levin was named accomodation of the year at this years Tourism Horowhena Awards ceremony 2000.

As Nita say’s, "Service is our game, quality is our aim. It’s what we’ve always strived for". Kei te pai Nita, an award I’m sure that was well deserved. Congratulations from all the whänau.

Basie Lewis also features on the front page of this weeks Levin Chronicle. He is part of the Security team looking after the cast and crew on the set of the movie "Thresh Hold " which is being shot at several locations in and around Foxton.

Basie’s brother Kim has been in a serious car smash in Australia and was badly hurt, however his mother reports that he is well on his way to making a full recovery. Our very best to you Kim on a speedy recovery

"kia kaha, kia manawanui".

Basie and Kim are sons of Te Whena and Janet Lewis.

A possible Hollywooder

Dallas Harper - son of Colleen and Max has scored himself a part on the set of the multi-million dollar movie "Lord of the Rings".

Working at various locations around the country Dallas says his role as a Rohan (the name for the goodies) is a pretty demanding part and his first day on the job was spent alongside the leading lady of the movie Liv Taylor.

This took five hours of filming but as Dallas says , after editing and cutting the actual screening is only about fifteen seconds.

Those of you who know Dallas won’t recognise him if you happen to see the movie as he moves around totally incognito with blonde hair and a scruffy beard.

His height and stamina were pre requisites for the part , but as Dallas explains it was really because of his Nordic ( Wehi Wehi) looks that he was able to get the part.

Dallas will work on the film till the end of the year and then he will give a lot of serious thought to a possible career change from being an accountant to becoming a Wehi Wehi Hollywood superstar.

"Kia ora Dallas kia kaha. Kia tüpato

Russel Crowe räua ko Sam Neil!"

Horowhenua College celebrated their 60th Jubilee over Easter and people came from all over. Raewyn Gardiner and her sisters in-law Suzie and Colleen catered for part of the weekend and they report an awesome time was had by all, so all you ones who never came back eat your hearts out.

While on this täke, a big congratulations to Jade Gardiner - son of Gail and the late Henry for his appointment as Head Boy at Horowhenua College. A credit to himself, his family and a real source of pride to his hapü and Iwi.

"Whaia ë te iti Kahurangi" Kia ora Jade. Ka nui te pai.

Uncle Nuki reports that Sharlene Davis Daughter of Tony and June moko of Joe and Suna has been appointed to the Health unit at Te Runanga O Raukawa. Kei te pai Sharlene from all the whänau.

Uncle Nuki would also like to extend on behalf of the Marae his thanks to Errol for his mahi over the years in keeping our grounds in tip top shape. His work has been a credit and with Joeseph’s help over the last few months the grounds have been kept in good shape.

But as work commitments take more of Errol and Joeseph’s time, we need to think of other ways to keep our grounds maintained.

So as we say thank you and haere ra to Errol and Joeseph, we say haere mai and welcome to Errol’s brother Lloyd who has shown in his short time on the Ride on mower that he is just as capable as our two retiring mower men.

Kia ora Lloyd for stepping in and taking up the slack.

Brian Ransfield (son of Tom and Kath Moko of Nanny Maude) an engineering rep for Ericcsons Cellular has been roaming all over the world to as part of his work.

He has recently returned from a business seminar to Thailand.

Prior to that he had attended similar conferences in Sweden and Ireland.

Certainly gets around this boy.

Uncle Nuki’s nephew Gerry Lyons paid the whänau a visit over Christmas. Gerry lives in The Northern Territory of Australia where he is into Maori Radio Broadcasting, alternative healing and Computer sales and service.

His time home was spent visiting whänau, catching up on the local gossip and making contacts in the Broadcasting field especially Maori Radio.

Gerry was able to obtain resources from people he met which could be taken back to Australia and be broadcast live on his Radio Station back home.

Gerry is also a regular visitor to our web page and korero’s a lot on the internet with whänau who are on line.

Uncle Nuki extends his greetings,

Tena koutou Ngäti Wehi Wehi.

Achievements of our Rangatahi

Wanderers seniors fullback Bernie Or’bell (son of Colleen nee Gardiner) proved that reputations mean nothing when he played a pivotal role in helping his team to beat Horowhenua/Kapiti competition leaders Toa in there club competition game under lights at the Levin Domain last Tuesday night.

His general play and his ability in setting up a try for his winger and then crossing over for one himself has earned Bernie a place in the Horowhenua/Kapiti NPC side.

Well done Bernard, could be a sign of better things to come.

Congratulations also to Karlos Lewis (son of Daryl / Spuddy moko of Tau and Hui ) for his inclusion in the New Zealand touch under 19 mixed team to play Australia in the next few months.

Nice one Karlos, play well and make us all proud.

A welcome home to for Taru Gardiner

( son of Hoko and Nita ) who has just spent 7 months with the United Nations doing peace keeping duties in the Sinai desert. Taru’s role as a member of the NZ Army contingent, involved the transporting of goods, food and water.

R&R was spent in exotic places such as Tel Aviv in Israel, the ancient city of Petra in Jordan (which is older than the pyramids ) Egypt, and on the shores of the Mediterranean.

Taru comes home via London, Los Angeles and Australia and is due back in New Zealand on the 19th of this month where he will spend a short time with his whänau and then probably a posting to East Timor.

A welcome back also to Glenn Cook( son of the late Maureen and Boy) who has come home to take up the challenge to learn the reo of his Tupuna.

Kia ora Glen, your whänau are proud of you.

Waltzing matilda’s

The Otaki Goldy Oldies Rugby Team the Gazbo’s have just returned home after a two week trip to Australia.

Hector Miratana was part of the tour as were our other Wehi Wehi whänau Hinga and Darkie.

They report an excellent time was had and one of the highs of the trip was attending the wedding of one of our Australian resident whänau Wayne Winterburn

Hector also reports that all the whänau that he was able to catch up with while he was over there are all ok and in good health

All there best wishes to the whänau back home here.

Tena koutou Hector, Hinga and Darkie, for your update on our family over in Oz.

Wonder if they’re backing a KIwi team to win the Super twelve?

Kotahitanga te kohanga reo

" Tena koutou me ngä tini ahuatanga o te wa."

Our roll is overflowing at the moment with a full compliment of tamariki. We have 4 new entrants to our Kohanga. They are, Moana Wallace: Daughter of Michael Wallace and Tracey Old (Mokopuna of Weti and Polly Wallace ) Ngäti Wehi Wehi,

Thomas and Mariana: tamariki of Tracey and Matt Rikihana and Te Waimatao Ropata, son of Kahu Ropata, all part of our Ngäti Raukawa whänau.

Things are going really well. The new papatakaro ( play ground ) is ready and the top 40mm of the ground surface will be dug up and new purpose made ground cover will be layed.

The old fence has been pulled down and the trees removed so that the ground cover can be fitted without the hassle of the fence and trees being in the road.

So when the time is right whänau we will be asking for your help and support at a working bee to put up the new fence so that our tamariki are safe and sound inside their new enviroment.

Our tamariki will soon have their very own new papatakaro to play in and they will surely be the envy of all the other Kohanga who do not have a resource such as this.

A special thank you also to, to Matua Richard for his mahi in creating our very own web page.We are getting modern and flash aren’t we. Kia ora Matua.

"Nö reira, mai I ngä kähui maunga,

ki te poho o tangaroa

e kore e whati toku waka ki te aha

koia tëna ko te waka o Te Kohanga Reo".

Kai karakia

Douin Hapeta comes to Nanny Maude’s house every other Sunday to offer karakia and holy communion to her and others.

"Tena koe Douin, your deeds have not gone unnoticed by the people of Ngäti Wehi Wehi and we applaud you in your actions of administering to the spiritual needs of our Kuia".

Our local parish priest Father Brian Quinn has been granted 6 months sabbatical leave to do study in Rome.

He flies out from Wellington on Sunday July the 9th.

First stop will be South America where he will spend 3 weeks in Lima with a fellow Marist Priest friend before he sets off for England and Ireland to meet up with relatives and friends.

Father Brian has scored himself a perk job while in Ireland. He has managed to get himself involved with an opë that is going on a pilgrimage to Lourdes and all he needs to do is to be able to say Mass and karakia to earn his free trip.

Kia ora Pa, you certainly have the qualifications to take up this offer.

Father will also spend time in France and visit the place where the Marist order started and then it’s on to Italy and Rome where he will do 3 months serious mahi.

On his return, he will call in to the Philipines and spend time there before returning to New Zealand on the 11th of January 2001.

Sabbatical leave is granted as a kind of reward to those who have been in the Priesthood for more than 30 years and Father Brian certainly meets those criteria with his 32 years of service to the Church.

A just reward for commitment, loyalty and service not only to Christ and the church but also to the spiritual needs of the people.

So from all your Ngäti Wehi Wehi flock Pa we wish you a happy and safe journey as you tippy haere all over the world.

May the Lord be with you on your travels and return you back home safe and sound.

"kia tau te rangimarie me ngä

manäkitanga ki runga i a koe".
